Travel Grants for IOTA 2023 Conference Speakers

IOTA seeks to make in its conferences accessible to scholars in a range of financial and professional circumstances. For its 2023 conference in Volos, Greece, January 11-15, 2023, IOTA will offer the following competitive grants:

Scholars In Need
Emergent Scholars
Student Scholars (Doctoral and Seminary Students)
Scholars from the Global South

 

Requirements for all grants

Scholars must:

  • have a paper accepted for the conference to be eligible (Short Communications are not eligible). Scholars may apply for a grant in advance of a proposed paper’s acceptance but will only be eligible for a grant if the paper is accepted.
  • attend the conference in person (there is no online option)
  • be a current IOTA member. If you are not a member, join here.
    • Note: Do NOT register for the 2023 conference. If you are awarded a grant, the registration fee will be waived. Registration refunds cannot be issued.
  • be affiliated with the Orthodox Church, including Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and other Eastern churches.

Each grant will be awarded based on a combination of merit and need, following the recommendations of panels appointed by the IOTA Board. Eligible scholars may apply to more than one grant category but may only receive one grant for the conference.

 

Requirements and terms specific to each grant category

Scholars In Need

Eligibility: Scholars who do not have access to institutional or other external funding are eligible to apply, and awards will be made based on a combination of merit and need. Also, see above: Requirements for all grants.

Award: The Scholars in Need Grant provides total value of benefits approximately $400/€375, including

  • a four-night hotel stay (January 11-15) for IOTA’s 2023 conference in Volos, Greece.
  • waived registration fee for the conference.
  • certain meals and coffees at the conference.

Note: If a grant recipient stays for fewer than four nights, the remaining award amount carries no cash value and cannot be applied to other travel expenses, such as air travel. Grant recipients who wish to stay longer will be financially responsible for the extra nights and will need to make their own arrangements with the hotel management.

The Scholars in Need travel grant was made possible by a generous gift from the Orthodox Theological Society in America (OTSA).

 

Emergent Scholars

Eligibility: Conference speakers who have completed their doctorates or equivalent within the last five years (during or since 2018) are eligible for the Emergent Scholars Grant. Note: applicants with a permanent Master’s degree are not eligible. Also, see above: Requirements for all grants.

Award: The Emergent Scholars Grant provides total value of benefits approximately $400/€375, including

  • a four-night hotel stay (January 11-15) for IOTA’s 2023 conference in Volos, Greece.
  • waived registration fee for the conference.
  • certain meals and coffees at the conference.

Note: If a grant recipient stays for fewer than four nights, the remaining award amount carries no cash value and cannot be applied to other travel expenses, such as air travel. Grant recipients who wish to stay in Volos longer will be financially responsible for the extra nights and will need to make their own arrangements with the hotel management.

Student Scholars (Doctoral and Seminary Students)

Eligibility: Current doctoral or seminary students who have insufficient institutional or external funding are eligible for the Student Scholars Grant. Also, see above: Requirements for all grants.

Award: The Student Scholars Grant provides total value of benefits approximately $1000/€930, including

  • a four-night hotel stay (January 11-15) for IOTA’s 2023 conference in Volos, Greece.
  • waived registration fee for the conference.
  • certain meals and coffees at the conference.
  • Coach/economy class airfare costs up to $600, no cash value. Documentation of ticket purchase is required, and reimbursement will be provided on the final day of the conference.

Note: If a grant recipient stays for fewer than four nights, the remaining award amount carries no cash value and cannot be applied to other travel expenses, such as air travel. Grant recipients who wish to stay in Volos longer will be financially responsible for the extra nights and will need to make their own arrangements with the hotel management.

 

Global South Scholars

Eligibility: Scholars located in the southern hemisphere are eligible for the Global South Scholars Grant.

Award: The Global South Scholars Grant provides total value of benefits approximately $1200/€1175, including

  • a four-night hotel stay (January 11-15) for IOTA’s 2023 conference in Volos, Greece.
  • waived registration fee for the conference.
  • certain meals and coffees at the conference.
  • airfare to and from the conference (coach/economy class flight arrangements will be made by IOTA staff in coordination with the scholar, no cash value).

Note: If a grant recipient stays for fewer than four nights, the remaining award amount carries no cash value and cannot be applied to other travel expenses, such as air travel. Grant recipients who wish to stay in Volos longer will be financially responsible for the extra nights and will need to make their own arrangements with the hotel management.

 

Application Process

Submit the completed application, including a c.v. /resume, to the IOTA Board Secretary Carrie Frederick Frost via email ([email protected]) on or before September 30, 2022.

Grant Applications are due September 30, 2022.
Applicants will be notified by October 15, 2022.
