Two Fellowships for Orthodox Scholars to Study at the Institute for Ecumenical Studies of the Angelicum

The Institute for Ecumenical Studies “Œcumenicum” of the Pontifical University St. Thomas Aquinas “Angelicum” of Rome and the International Orthodox Theological Association are pleased to announce that two scholarships are available for the academic year 2026-2027. The scholarships are designated for Eastern Orthodox or Oriental Orthodox students who wish to deepen their theological expertise in ecumenism, grow professionally, and engage in the church’s mission.

One postdoctoral fellowship for the Advanced Studies Postdoctoral Program “Congar School for Ecumenics” of the Institute for Ecumenical Studies of the Angelicum

This fellowship is open to scholars, age 23–35, who have completed their doctoral studies and are seeking to participate in a one-year postdoctoral residential program.

Duration: 8 months (from October 2026 to May 2027).

Amount: 15,000 euros, covering tuition fees and a monthly stipend of 1,050 euros paid out for 8 months.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Theology or a closely related field.

Expectations: The recipient is expected to produce a paper and engage with the Institute’s academic activities, such as weekly meetings, participation in courses and conferences, and other projects.

One fellowship for a semester of ecumenical studies at the Institute for Ecumenical Studies of the Angelicum

This grant offers an opportunity for a one-semester study period within the ecumenical section of the “Œcumenicum”.

Duration: 4 months (from October 2026 to January 2027, or from February to May 2027).

Amount: 7,000 euros, covering tuition fees for one semester and a monthly stipend of 1,050 euros paid out for 4 months.

Eligibility: Open to graduate students and researchers, ages 21–35, with a demonstrated interest in ecumenism.

Expectations: Recipients may enrol in up to 7 courses offered by the “Œcumenicum”.

  1. A letter of intent: Outlining research goals, motivation for joining the Institute, and how the scholarship aligns with their intellectual path and church mission.
  2. A Curriculum Vitae, including official transcripts of previous university-level studies, both undergraduate and graduate.
  3. A proof of excellent proficiency in spoken and written English.
  4. (For the postdoctoral program only) A description of the candidate’s scholarly project on an ecumenical topic.
